Why I Chose to Avoid Natural Hair Products
Jun 24, 2025
If you have mixed-texture hair—say curls at the crown, tighter coils at the nape, and looser waves around your edges—you already know it’s a balancing act. Each section of your hair may need something completely different. And for many of us, the biggest need is moisture retention. This is where natural products often fall short. They tend to be water-based and light, which is great in theory—but without a sealing agent, all that moisture just evaporates. Fast.
Why Silicones Saved My Hair
I know “silicone” is a scary word in the natural hair world. It’s been demonized for years as a pore-clogging, buildup-causing ingredient that creates “fake” shine. But here’s the truth: silicones are sealants. They coat the hair shaft, lock in moisture, smooth frizz, and reduce friction—especially during detangling.
And for my mixed-texture hair, that coating is essential. Without it, my strands are left exposed, vulnerable to dryness, breakage, and environmental damage.
Once I reintroduced silicones—into my routine, everything changed. My hair felt softer. Detangling took half the time. And the moisture from my conditioners actually stayed in.
